In the past the scientific community in Korea has avoided engaging with the creationists, fearing that doing so could increase the credibility of the movement. However, silence is no longer an option.
The STR has been fighting to remove the content on evolution from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is just one aspect of how the concept of development has evolved.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a theory of science that explains the change in genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment, which can lead to variations in genes or even whole genomes. Over the course of many generations, these changes can result in the emergence of new species. The predominant theory of evolution is natural selection, which explains the process through which those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more frequently than those with disadvantages. This variation in reproduction could be a catalyst to the emergence and evolution of new species.
The word "evolution" comes from the Latin word"evolution" which means unrolling or revealing. However, the concept itself has had many different meanings as it has taken form in the fields of science and in other fields. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species evolved into new species in a predetermined fashion. The term"transmutation" was coined by the Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.
More recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living organisms develop traits that improve their chances of survival or the ability to reproduce offspring. As time passes, genetic variation can lead a population to develop new physical characteristics or biological functions. The change in gene frequencies is known as natural selection and it drives most evolutionary change. Other changes that aren't genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolution since they aren't passed on to future generations.
Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and a multitude of scientific studies, creationists have seized on the notion that the theory is controversial to argue that it should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have gained a few victories in their campaign to exclude evolution from high school textbooks, including the removal of references to the evolutionary history of humans as well as the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur that is thought to be an ancestral bird's ancestor.

In the United States, efforts to restrict the teaching of evolution have made some headway in a few states. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC), is campaigning for textbooks to include content on the evolutionary history of horses and their ancestral avian species Archaeopteryx.

It is crucial to keep in mind that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a wide range of sources, such as fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently verify the evidence.
The majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. This support is based on many different reasons. Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution and special creation and consider their views to be "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of the created species." This theory states that God creates species from scratch and allows them to change over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species similar to the original.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that all the species of the beginning were created at the same moment and then slowly evolved. They reject the concept of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating living cannot come from nonliving matter.
In general, creationists are against teaching evolution in schools. Numerous professional associations, like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education are in support of this view, as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Some scientists and educational institutions are, however, more flexible and allow creationism and evolution to be included in their curriculum.
What is Creationism?
When people think of creationism most often, they think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently announced that they will eliminate references to evolution from their books. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, called the Archeopteryx. Its next target is to remove portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research and also on human evolution.
STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and members. Its mission is to cut out what it regards as the "atheist materialism" that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of students in biology found that half did not believe evolution. The causes aren't clear, but may include religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists across the United States.
The KACR accomplished a number of things through its lectures and seminars in the past. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences, with an orthodox creationist perspective, which attracted the attention of college communities. In 1991, a professor, together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.
On August 7 and 8, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin addressed thousands of people. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
